Are Birthdays Time To Celebrate?

Yes I turned 55 this week, is it a midlife crisis? Well with both my children living at the other end of the north island, my choice to move I know, it does make having a family event more difficult. They both phoned early in the morning to wish me a happy day and a much appreciated bunch of gorgeous flowers arrived at work, but it is not the same as a hug and sitting around the table together on the day.

I made the other half plan my day himself without my help for the first time in 35 years of marriage. He huffed and puffed but finally organised a visit to Circus theatre in Martinborough for both dinner and movies.  It was appreciated although the movie I chose despite having a great lineup of stars was so memorable I cannot recall its title. We actually sat in separate theatres as he loves blood and guts and I like chick flicks, I was the only one in the theatre - it was wednesday evening I s'pose.  They say you have to keep the romance alive. We used to take time out to holiday so we spent time together doing what we enjoyed but it has gone by the way the last two years building a new house. I need to make the effort to put the romance and spontaneity back into my life.

I have been wondering about joining Rotary, but is that the solution to my emotional void? I need to find something to be passionate about. For a while it was my job; but work despite being enjoyable, very challenging in fact,  is not passion, it is work.  I tried patchwork for a while but I not really a crafty sort of person. I used to love cycling and tramping but a bout of health challenges  - diagnosed with polymyalgia, has made that rather tiring.  I hope to resume tramping, I have national tramps I want to experience.  Milford, Heaphy and Humpback for example.

Maybe I need to write my own Bucket List. Yes that could be the thing that inspires me and would give me direction.

Bucket List 2013

  1. More car rallies  - October Brits on the Beach
  2. Wicked - go to the show in October while in Auckland
  3. Enjoy a meal at Tirohana Estate, Martinborough for my sisters birthday Sept.
  4. Christmas - enjoy a family xmas
I am looking forward to experiencing Boomrock Estate later in June. I bought a day at Boomrock for hubby and I.  It includes a high speed race, a 4WD drive, archery, clay shooting, knife throwing and a three course lunch plus morning and afternoon teas.

I have been watching a video series called Ladies and Letters with Anne Reid and Maureen Lipman. Two ladies writing to each other, tarty replies, friends but not friends - your like a voyeuristic onlooker. And reading Ellie Dean, war time stories of women and families, enjoyable easy reads.

My favourite magazines are Life and Leisure and NZ House and Garden. I love to see well designed homes, read about entrepreneurial people and see examples of furniture that I can replicate if the mood takes me. Or just appreciate the beauty others have created.

I mentioned polymyalgia, finding your health compromised is something that we have no control over.  I have had a number of setbacks with arthritic type illness. Diagnosed many years ago with fibromyalgia I have learnt to live effectively with that but the pain in the large muscle mass is quite different.  Sadly, the medication prednisone is taking it's toll with my weight. I have always been weight conscious but now I have lost the fight and having to accept that I am gaining weight. Some of that might be age, some the medication and some the fact that I do not have the energy to exercise like I have always made myself do. Trying on clothes from the wardrobe and they don't fit is disheartening, mirrors become your enemy, you avoid them like the plague.

My thought for the day -
